Marion Jones to compete in New Jersey
Five-time Olympic medallist Marion Jones is scheduled to compete at the Princeton Invitational on May 12th. The event is part of the Golden Spike Tour, a series of four outdoor track meets coordinated by USA Track & Field.
Jones will appear at six major meets in the United States during the 2001 Outdoor season.
"Marion Jones is a great ambassador for our sport, and we are thrilled that she has chosen to support track and field in the United States by appearing in some of the best meets in the country, including the Golden Spike Tour," USATF CEO Craig Masback said. "To have Marion competing on her home soil with such frequency is an enormous accomplishment for the sport of track and field."
"Any time she steps on a track, it helps increase Americas interest in track and field. The sport hit a high point last year with the successes of the Olympic Trials and the Olympic Games, and Marions continued and active involvement will help build momentum for the World Championships this August in Edmonton, Canada."
In addition to Jones, athletes expected to compete include Olympic Gold medallist Nick Hysong and Silver medallist Lawrence Johnson in the pole vault, Gold medallist Angelo Taylor in the 400 meters, Silver medallist Terrence Trammell in the 100 meter dash and bronze Medallist Melissa Morrison in the 100 meter hurdles. Strong fields are also expected in the mens 110 meter hurdles, mens mile and womens mile. International stars, including several medallists from recent Olympic Games and World Championships, are expected from more than a dozen countries.
The meet will take place at William Weaver Stadium on the campus of Princeton University. Collegiate events begin at 10:30am with the Golden Spike events beginning at 1:00pm (field events) and 2:00pm (track events). The Golden Spike Tour portion of the meet is structured as a fan-friendly, action-packed event and seating is limited, so fans are encouraged to arrive early to watch these world-class athletes.
Tickets will be available at the gate. Ticket prices are: $15 (Adults); $5.00 (Students & Children). Members of USA Track & Field will be admitted for $5.00 (Adults) & $3.00 (Students). USATF Memberships will be available at the gate. Special group discounts are available through USA Track & Field (800-858-8184).
